Moving, glowing wall
Hello! It’s been a while since I have written here. I always mean to write more. January into February always is a bit of a blur. I allow myself some time off and just kind of float along, quiet open hours at Tusk, come if you want vibe, no fuss or productions happening. One of my winter visitors in late January, neighbor and artist Selina Trepp, asked me about hosting her stop motion animation projection piece at Tusk. Soon after I visited her studio, and soon after that we were installing in the space together, just like that. When I saw the piece in her studio I knew it was perfect for the season and moment in time. Rich in color and full of hand touched energy, enveloping you and releasing you all in the 3 minute loop, that feels longer than 3 minutes when you experience it.
Installing in the space meant creating a way to block out light from my windows for daytime hours. Selina brought in painted fabrics from her studio that are used in the piece made into curtains for the windows. I heard people outside passing by expressing curiosity as the windows were first blocked. Selina wrote the show title on the window. I love seeing the title layered over the painted fabric in the window.
The curtains are tied back at night so people walking by can see the projection piece, during the day I let the curtains down to keep the light out as much as possible for people to be able to sit down and enjoy during the day.
It has been so nice hosting this work, every time I watch it I see something new. People come in and want to spend time with it, first in a bit of shock and maybe with questions. Then in and out, maybe chatting some and then back in. Every photo I take is a different painting. I think of Selina’s hand making every stroke and movement, my whole wall filled with the flowing, glowing magic. I have loved sitting with people in the quiet awe.
There are many moments in the space that invite, the fabric covering of the bench woven at the weaving mill, with a comforting touch. There is a lamp casting a light (made with objects from her studio - a piece of dyed plaster as base, thick wire bucket handle, a piece of painted cinefoil as shade that also appears in the animation) the lamp casts down to illuminate the flipbook of the piece, the “shop” item for the show that Selina came up with- so perfect. I like to have something available for sale that people can remember the show with. With the flipbook people can take the piece home. The cover is printed with the texture of the fabric of the bench.
Reality’s Truth is closing this Sunday with a performance at 3PM. Dan Britney and Michael Zerang will play a 45 minute set alongside Selina’s piece. Selina will be there Friday evening 6-8, then regular hours on Saturday 12-6. Hope to see you soon! <3 Mary Eleanor
