On the coming of the 12th year of Tusk I felt the pull to mark it with something new and special. Laura and Caleb at Clue had early on talked about being interestedĀ in working with me to create a scent for Tusk, and I was excited about this possibility. It felt like the decisions around it held a lot of weight but it didn't take me long to circle around one of my favorite olfactory memories, the flower of the southern magnolia, Magnolia Grandiflora.
Growing up in Alabama it was rare that I was not around a southern magnolia tree. They were in our yards, my grandmother's yard in Tuscumbia AL, lining streets, publicĀ parks, along the highways, in photographs. They can rise to be 150 feet tall, their massive dark green leaves creating a covered canopy underneath. I spent very many years under the magnolia trees in my life. Underneath them I was in my own world, my own magnolia club.
As I have grown older I miss many things about the south, first and foremost my friends, but the trees, creeks and other things that are very hard to describeĀ in words have been flooding back, things that don't leave even if you leave them. I think some of these things have found their way into Tusk, inevitably so.
Many thanks to Laura Oberwetter and Caleb Vanden Boom of Clue. Henry Gross for the beautiful custom glass tester vessel, Lilian Martinez for the blossom illustration, and to Lisa Easterling for facilitatingĀ my leaf collecting journey around the Alabama Shoals.
Continuously grateful for friends that help me and Tusk along, and believe in me.
This Sunday at Tusk there will be leaves hanging and the perfume for smelling. It will be available in the future for purchase if you would like.
